The Spanish Government adopts the new reform of the law regulating rights of Foreigners

The new legislation, which will be the fourth reform of the Foreigners’ Law in the last nine years, this time containing important changes, will now go through parliamentary procedures in congress and despite having obtained a certain consensus it is not expected to have an easy ride in the legislative chamber. The government has decided that the reform of this law cannot be postponed, both for the modification of the rights of foreigners to the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court, as well as for the necessary transposition of the different directives adopted in the European Union. The legislative text adopted by the executive is aimed to guarantee the exercise of fundamental rights, including immigrants in irregular situations, according to the case law of the Constitutional Court, without this being an obstacle to impose limits on the permanence of foreigners when it is not underpinned by legal residence.
